What are energy audits and how do they differ from home inspections? There are many different methods and tools used to perform energyaudits. Some audits are simple inspections/consultations that look at conditions and values and provide an educated guess as to what upgrades may save. Some audits use highly technical equipment such as thermal imaging (infrared) cameras to search for air intrusion and insulation defects not seen by the naked eye. The most advanced audits use a combination of all these as well as software capable of mapping a home’s energy features (R-value, U-value, air infiltration, HVAC leakage, appliances, etc) to give a total energy scorecard (HERS Index Number, used to rate Energy Star homes). Thermal Auditing has all the tools, the proper training, and software to perform these services.
